Michele Smith

Michele Smith has over 25 years of experience consulting to Fortune 500 companies such as Verizon, GE, St. Paul Companies, Litel, and CitiBank.  More recently, she has worked with Applied Strategic Technologies, Inc.

Michele’s primary area of expertise is business strategy, particularly the alignment of organizational design, business processes and performance management to strategy. 

In addition to business strategy, Michele also has a background in HR/OD.  She has considerable experience implementing large-scale organizational change efforts and installing HR systems.  Performance management and self-directed development designs are particular specialties.

Michele is co-developer of a week-long leadership seminar called, “The Dynamics of Leadership.”  This seminar takes managers through an intensive self-exploration of their personal leadership style and helps them maximize their effectiveness at influencing others.

During the 80’s and 90’s, Michele worked with the Rummler-Brache Group where she ran major process reengineering projects in organizations such as Citibank and GTE.  During the 70’s she worked closely with Dr. Thomas F. Gilbert, a leader in the field of human performance analysis and author of a book entitled Human Competence.  In addition to large corporations, she has also worked for such diverse organizations as NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota where she was Director of Intervention for the Multi-Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT), the largest public health study ever undertaken.  She has an MA from Columbia University in New York City.

Michele is also writing a book, with Fred Hansen, on strategy, entitled Making and Winning Strategic Bets.  This book is a practical guide to formulating, implementing and tracking strategy that can be used by strategic thinkers at all levels of an organization.
